Our town was commemorated on two coins: a local one of 2 złotys denomination, and another one issued by the Central Bank of Malawi, a small (13.5 million people) country situated in eastern Africa. Interestingly, both coins present the front of the Basilica of Saint Nicolaus, the Bishop.
20 kwachas – a coin from Malawi
The coin belongs to “The Salt Routes” series. The denomination is 20 Malawian kwachas, which converted to Polish złotys (at the exchange rate on 9th August 2012) is around 0.37 złotys. Its collector value is much higher because of the small number issued (1000 coins) and because of the material it is made from. The whole international series of eight silver coins costs 2390 złotys on the numismatic market!
Obverse
In the top left fragment there is an image of Queen Elizabeth II, known from the British pound. Malawi used to be a British colony which became independent in 1964 and nowadays is a part of the Commonwealth. In the central part, there is a map of Europe with Bochnia and Gdańsk marked on it. The towns are connected by a line symbolising the Vistula river. On top there is the lettering: ‘The Salt Routes’ and at the bottom ‘Republic of Malawi 2009 MK 20’ (the year of issue and denomination) and the emblem of the Republic of Malawi.
The reverse
Consists of two images. The upper image presents the estuary of the Motława in Gdańsk, with its characteristic port crane. The lower image shows a part of Saint Nicolaus Basilica and the bell tower. At the very top, there is a lettering ‘The Salt Routes’ and at the very bottom ‘Bochnia – Uście Solne – Gdańsk’.
