ARTHROPODA Butterfly Museum is the largest permanent exhibition of butterflies of the world in in Poland. It includes more than five thousand specimens from all zoographic zones. The collection, which is presented on two storeys, has been built over the last 37 years and is still updated.
The visit to the museum is a great lesson about nature and geography and a great treat for the eye.
This museum shows an overview of daytime and night-time butterflies, and their division by families and genera found on all the continents as well as species whose appearance or biology illustrate various natural phenomena.
A moth doesn’t have to be grey and a butterfly can be a leaf, an owl or a tiger.
An important part of the collection are also the native lepidopterofauna representatives, including the easily recognizable species common in the vicinity of Bochnia.
Butterflies classification scheme is based on Linnaeus, who introduced the Latin binomial nomenclature in the description of biological species.
The collection shows the largest group of animals living on the earth, Arthropods (Arthropoda), among them: day and night butterflies, beetles (Polish and from around the world), scorpions, praying mantis, bugs.
The exhibition is divided into the following themes:
- The life cycle of a butterfly,
- Ways to protect butterflies against dangers (the phenomenon of mimicry and cryptic colouration),
- Migration of butterflies,
- The impact of climate conditions on the development of the various families of butterflies
One of the main attractions of the exhibition are also macro pictures of butterfly wings and beetle heads.
