The statue was created after the death of the Pope John Paul II to honour his life.
On 7th April 2005, during an especially summoned session, the Town Council of Bochnia passed a resolution concerning the financing the statue of Holy Father John Paul II from the town’s budget and donations. The statue was to be erected next to the Minor Basilica of Saint Nicolaus in Bochnia. The council also decided to fund statues of the Holy Father at the Bochnia churches of Saint Paul the Apostle and Saint John Nepomucene.
The statue of the Pope on the Sanctuary Square in the Saint Nicolaus parish was unveiled on 9th October 2005. A week later the stone figure of the Holy Father in the Saint John Nepomucene parish was consecrated, as well as the wooden figure of John Paul II resting on a cross in the Saint Paul the Apostle parish.
